I just made some homemade non-toxic chest rub and it was not hard! One thing I seem to use every year is a chest rub. This year, however, I am much more knowledgeable about essential oils. Previously I just thought they smelled nice. And boy does this homemade non-toxic chest rub smell ah-mazing!
With so many potential oils to choose from, which would I choose to include in my homemade chest rub and in what combination? And which would I share with you, my readers? I recently discovered a gem of an oil blend called R.C. I am all about keeping it simple – why not use one oil for my homemade chest rub that does it all!
What is R.C. Blend?
R.C. is an oil blend that contains many of the oils I have used before in creating a homemade chest rub all in one bottle. Here are the oils contained in this blend: 3 different kinds of Eucalyptus oils (yes, three: E. globulus, E. radiata, E. citrodora.), Myrtle, Pine (apparently Pine has been used since the time of Hippocrates to support respiratory function!), Spruce, Marjoram, Lavender, Cypress, and Peppermint. I don’t know anyone who would buy each of those oils individually so I am thrilled there is a blend to make my life easier.
Why I used ghee as the carrier oil
I am completely in love with ghee right now and here are 5 reasons why. It was traditionally used as a carrier oil in Aryuvedic medicine so that is why I am using it here. Please feel completely welcome to substitute coconut oil if you do not have ghee on hand.
So let’s get to the homemade chest rub how-to…
Homemade Non-toxic Chest Rub
This recipe makes about a third of a cup.
Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp grass fed ghee
- 1 Tbsp sweet almond oil
- 1 Tbsp beeswax
- 1 tsp R.C. blend (50 drops) (where to buy)
Directions
In a small glass measuring cup or mason jar set over a small pot of hot water on the stove on low heat, gently melt the ghee (coconut oil can be substituted). Add the beeswax pellets and stir until melted. Remove the oil from the heat and allow it to come to room temperature (it shouldn’t be hot to the touch). In a small, empty and clean 2 ounce glass jar, add the sweet almond oil and the essential oil. When the ghee/beeswax mixture is cool enough to touch, pour into the jar with the almond/essential oil mixture. Stir to combine. It is important not to add the essential oils while the oil mixture is hot as it will destroy the healing properties in the oils. Place in the refrigerator to set up.
Store at room temperature so it is soft enough to rub on the feet or chest. Rub as needed, every 3-4 hours on the chest or soles of the feet.

Any specific reason for the age restriction? My youngest is 16 months. I’d love to be able to rub some of this on his feet, and put socks on him at nighttime during a cold.

There are certain oils that are safe for infants. EOs are potent. You can use lemon or lavender. I would check out this book so you know for sure but your son is almost 2 anyway! http://amzn.to/18nNobp

Do you have any recommendations for a vapor rub I could use on my 6 month old? Maybe just use less RC?

I’ve been looking closely at YL and DoTerra but have decided on Native American Nutritionals bc they source all of their oils, are certified organic, organically grown or wild and their peppermint is 1st distilled. Have you any experience with this company?

I’m a super busy person. Not looking to become a distributor etc etc. I simply wanted to purchase some of the R.C. blend oil. Granted I’m semi techno handicapped but still… I never did find a way. Would you please,PLEASE email me a DIRECT link to where to purchase your oils.
(Seems like a major sales snafu to me)
Thanks in advance

I do not sell the oils directly – only the Young Living website does that. If you want to purchase them retail then just follow this link: https://www.youngliving.com/signup/?site=US&sponsorid=1478552&enrollerid=1478552
then select retail customer. If you read my Q&A you will see that most people just sign up as a distributor to get the discount.

My husband cannon use most vapor rub mixtures on his chest because he is a neck breather and is on oxygen. Have you ever made or heard of a vapor rub lotion that doesn’t require wax? Vicks used to make a lotion but it has been discontinued.

thank you for this recipe! I wish I found it sooner 🙂

Is there something else that could be used in place of the R.C. blend essential oil? I am allergic to pine, spruce, and cypress.
