Do you love the skin you are in?
Today I have a guest post from a childhood friend, Jennifer Lambert Jordan. We reconnected over Facebook after many years of not seeing each other based on our shared love of all things holistic, essential-oily, and real food. She has an amazing story to share!
Jennifer’s Story
The Gut – Skin Connection and the idea for a Science Experiment
I’ve had the privilege of knowing Lindsey Bernat Gremont, aka Homemade Mommy, for over 25 years. The wealth of knowledge she has brought to my family is immeasurable. What I have learned about supporting a balanced digestive system and immune response is life-changing. I will be forever grateful for Google and real-food bloggers for the arsenal of information I have in dealing with my baby that I didn’t have with my older children.
Some of that knowledge has come my way by accident. I am a big believer in the power of essential oils.
What is Melrose Essential Oil blend?
Melrose essential oil is blend of Melaleuca (tea tree), Naouli, Rosemary and Clove essential oils. This combination makes it have supportive properties for the skin.
Decision to make a natural homemade cream
I decided to use the information we had learned to create a soothing cream for my 20-month-old. This recipe could not possibly be any simpler, and I feel so good about putting a 100% edible product on him.
Make your own healthy homemade cream with this super easy homemade recipe.

Homemade Cream
Homemade Cream Ingredients
1/2 cup coconut oil
25 drops Melrose essential oil
25 drops Lavender essential oil
Equipment Needed to Make the Homemade Cream
Small glass container
stand mixer(optional for option 2)
Directions
Option 1:
Bring a small pot of water to a simmer over medium low heat. Measure out about half a cup (3.5 oz if weighing on a kitchen scale) coconut oil into a pint sized mason jar. Place the mason jar of coconut oil into the warm water and allow it to liquefy gently. Remove from heat and wait a few minutes while stirring. When the coconut oil is just warm to the touch (not hot), add 20-30 drops each of Melrose and Lavender essential oils.
Stir to mix the oils well. Once the coconut oil comes to room temperature it will solidify into a cream.
Option 2:
Place coconut oil (solid form) and the Melrose and Lavender essential oils into a stand mixer. Whip on medium high speed until it resembles whipped frosting. Remove and place in your small jars (you will have enough for two jars of homemade winter skin cream). This option will yield a nice whipped consistency that will be easy to get out of the jar in winter and apply on the skin!
Homemade Dry Irritated Skin Cream Storage
If your house is above 76 degrees, you may want to store in the fridge or it will liquefy. This is surely going to be a winter-staple in our bath/bed routine!

What is CLO?

Cod Liver Oil

I am allergic to Lavender, do you recommend a substitute? Or perhaps just leave it out? Thank you so much for your post and your time!
Lindsey Gremont says
Which lavender are you allergic to? Just curious because there are a lot of different types out there.
Bruce says
I would suggest Frankincense in place of the Lavender if that causes a problem for you. YoungLiving products are the best, and I’ve never experienced problems with the quality of the products.
Jennifer says
I haven’t really looked into different kinds, just know anything scented with it makes me react.
Kat says
You might be reacting to a chemical that has “lavender scent” as many lavenders aren’t pure. But you might react to lavender itself. I don’t react to the scent as much, but any on tender skin or rashes or inflammation makes it so much worse and itchier.
misty says
when people react to young living oils lavender, it is because their body is depleted of sulfur, try supplementing for 30 days with YL sulfurzyme or a homeopathic sulfur (there are many size dosages, start low and work up if needed) Gary Young told a class to wait about 30 days and retry a test area, if you have a rash again, it means that your body has not stored up to his normal sulfur reserves yet, it can take 30-60-90 days.. and you also have to remove wheat (ALL) from your diet, it depletes your body of the good stuff.. Hope this helps you! It means your reacting to the phenols in the essential oils.. Young living is the best.. only medical grade in the United States.. so safe you can drink it!
Kat says
My thoughts too – test the lavender on your skin to be sure you don’t react. I’m very allergic to it, and it was YL lavender i reacted with (and others as well). I have well-meaning people try to tell me i used an inferior product – but that is not true. I seem to react to any kind.
Melissa says
Thank you so much for this! I am eager to try it. However, I live in South Africa and can’t find a distributor of Melrose Oil. Can I mix my own using equal proportions of Melaleuca (tea tree), Naouli, Rosemary and Clove essential oils?
Lindsey Gremont says
Melissa,
please email me to discuss this further if you wish – your other comments would be best discussed offline as they are South African specific.
Natalie says
I will have to get the oils and try this. I will have to leave out the lavender, as I have not found a lavender oil that doesn’t give me a migraine. 🙁
Ann says
I would love to try this, however my son is allergic to coconut. Do you have any suggestions for a substitute.
Thank you
Lindsey Gremont says
You can use ghee or even almond or olive oil.
Ann says
Thank you. Can’t wait to try it
Elizabeth says
I cannot wait to try this and hopefully get some relief!!
Lindsey Gremont says
Please do let us know how it goes!
vanessa says
I am interested in how it feels when you apply it.
Lindsey Gremont says
I put some on my own arms last night and it didn’t burn at all. It was very soothing and my skin became very soft.
vanessa says
Thank you I will give this a try. Lotions and creams only hurt when their skin is inflamed.
Linda says
I am into essential oils. Essential oils are good for almost everything. I would not be without them. They help so much.
Lindsey Gremont says
I would not think this would be a healthy non-toxic option.
Carol says
What about psoriasis? Will this edema cream work for it?
Lindsey Gremont says
Haven’t tried that. Maybe someone else will?
Janelle says
I am a Young Living Addict (and distributor hehe) and yes, the Melrose Oil blend is designed for skin ailments. You can google it to learn more.
Sarah says
Carol- did you try this?? I have psoriasis, too, on about 90% of my body. Would love to know if you have had good results. I assume it would be beneficial. I currently use a blend of shea butter, coconut oil, and tea tree oil on my face, it helps a bit, but not a miracle cure.
Lisa says
Are the essential oils necessary? Would the coconut work on its own?
Becky says
Just because your skin breaks out in the winter does not mean it’s not food related. My hands used bleed in the winter until I went gluten and dairy free.
Camille says
Thank you so much for this recipe ! Again, thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to get rid of it for once !
Rosella says
I would love to try the homemade cream as soon as I order the Melrose oil.
Love reading all the post here, learning so much.
thanks
Amber says
I read on the Young Livkng Oils page that Melrose oil should not be used on infants and young children. I wanted to try this on my 8 month old but am now hesitant.
Lindsey Gremont says
I have not heard this. I would just use half if you are concerned. Or just try lavender only first.
Erin says
It has clove oil in it, which should NOT be used on babies is what I’m reading.
Lindsey Gremont says
Many people use clove oil on babies for teething. Please read this book for more info on what essential oils are appropriate for infants and children. http://bit.ly/GentleBabiesEOs
lisa says
My daughter is allergic to lavender is there another recipe?
Lindsey Gremont says
Which brand of lavender? Essential oils do not contain allergens because they do not contain the proteins of the plant. Proteins are where the allergens are. Just curious. You can leave it out if you think it will be an issue but I would be surprised if she was allergic to YL lavender.
Mcristina says
Can I eliminate the lavender oil? I don’t like putting that on my boys.
Stephanie says
Thank you!
Aurora says
I made this recipe (but halfed it) for my friends little girl (2yrs) with really bad skin. Friend has tried EVERYthing. I gave her a small jar along with some California Baby Calendula Cream and told her to try them both out. Two weeks later she tells me that the Calendula didn’t really make a difference but that this Cream has been working GREAT!! It has calmed her skin and calmed her baby!! She says she doesn’t leave home with out it now!!! Happy to have found something truly Natural that works!!
Lindsey Gremont says
That is amazing! Thank you for coming over here and telling us! I will share with everyone!
Pam says
I made your cream two days ago as best I could (not living in the USA). After just three applications (I’m really bad at remembering) my daughter’s skin looks amazing!. Thank you for a great blog.
Brenda says
Thank u for this remedy…really hopeful it will work for my four month old daughter.
Amy Lawton says
When I saw this recipe I had to give it a try. After three weeks its completely gone! Praise God!
Erin says
So I made this last night and swiped some on my poor ruined hands..and already they feel better!! I only had the coconut and lavender oil on hand so that’s what I used. Only issue is..it didn’t solidify over night. So it’s still totally liquid. Any suggestions? I was thinking of throwing it in the fridge but wasn’t sure..
Lindsey Gremont says
So glad to hear it Erin! You can put it in the fridge if you want!
Moira Schomburg says
Thank you so much for a natural cream!! We have been struggling since my son was 5 months old. He has been living in footy PJs because he scratches until he bleeds. We recently added a probiotic to his gut, which seems to help. My hubby will lather him up with store bought lotions several times a day to keep it at bay, plus the prescription cream. I do not like the use of either, but it’s better than the bleeding. I think I have all these ingredients in my cupboard and I will get to work today. Thanks!
Kati says
I don’t know that I would want to use a commercial preparation for molluscum. It contains organically bound iodine (found as one of the active ingredients in preparations for use as contrast medium for ct scans etc.) Make your own conclusion about that. I would use olive oil/coconut oil, tea tree eo, Australian lemon myrtle eo. studies showed that both worked for this condition.
Kati says
I would never use essential oils neat on my own skin none the less on a babies skin. Almost all eo’s should be cut with a carrier oil such as olive, almond, coconut, even jojoba.
Lisa says
Hi, I’ve been definitely searching for a homemade cream and I’ve seen many variance such as your recipe and another one that used marjarom.
Lindsey Gremont says
You can use less and see how she does with it!
Rosemary Bales says
My husband had a brain aneurysm in 2000, he was 58. He started getting Psoriasis after that and it has gotten worse each year. It has practically taken over his entire body. I am anxious to try this and a couple others I have found in a few other natural living blogs using essential oils. Before his aneurysm and the 3 month stay in the hospital he had never had any skin problems in any way.
JC says
Wow! That is so interesting. Did the cream help his skin?
Shannon says
I have been using this recipe for two weeks on my 11 year old daughter. Guess what it worked both arms are now looking 80% better!!! She is still itchy but not as much Im sure with in two more weeks it will be gone. Im so happy I tried this we don’t usually go for natural stuff but this stuff really works
ellemeno says
I just made this natural ointment today and so far, so good.
Lindsey Gremont says
I think every case is different so I can’t give you a definitive time frame. Other commenters have given some testimonials which might help you.
mary mclane says
So, what kind of cocnut oil should I use, refined or unrefined?
Lindsey Gremont says
I provide a link to what I recommend in the post. I use raw virgin coconut oil (unrefined).
Charly says
Would this be safe on the face, under the eyes of a child?
Lindsey Gremont says
I would not put near the eyes – they may rub it into their eyes and then they would be sad! Lower cheeks yes but make sure they don’t rub it until it is soaked in.
Lisa says
There are so many variables… is she eating a new food? Perhaps there is a pollen in the air that has cross-reactivity with a food making her sensitive to it at this time? New detergents or lotions or clothing? It is so frustrating… hang in there and keep up the mystery solving.
jayne says
hello! just attempted to make this cream and mine isn’t turning into a cream texture. my oil was already a liquid…any suggestions? really looking forward to seeing how this works for my 4 yr old!
Lindsey Gremont says
If it is already liquid just follow those directions. You can put in the fridge if you want it to set up but it will work either way. Coconut oil is liquid at warmer than room temperature.
Lindsey Gremont says
I wouldn’t use near the eyes on a young child. It might irritate them.
