As you all know I have cut out most grains (I still eat some corn and rice) and refined sugars and I explained this was to heal my tummy (or gut) and my lungs (asthma). I have also started taking supplements of probiotics and cod liver oil (vitamin A and D) to build up my immune system. So far so good as I haven’t had any asthma symptoms for 5 months and fewer colds than last year…but what really causes these problems? And are people really doing this on a wider scale?
Interestingly enough – there is a more strict nutrition protocol out there to heal gut issues and has been used for more serious medical issues like autism and failure to thrive. I have thought about trying it if after a year of my current diet doesn’t resolve all of my issues. It is called the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome). Here is a great post by Butter Believer on this diet and why she is doing it. I think a lot of kids really benefit from this – the question is – just how do you get a kid to drink broth every day during the intro??? 😉 Have any of you heard of this or thought of trying it? Very interesting approach. I love her quote in her blog back to Hippocrates: “ALL disease begins in the gut.”

YES! I've got two kids – one would eat no meat, the other would eat no veg! Both hated anything fatty. And we did the intro and have been on GAPS for a year! You can read about my picky eater daughter's total transformation, and how to do the GAPS diet starting here.Browse around and you'll find a lot more of our whole family's story, why we started this process, and the healing we have experienced! I'm starting a new series on empowering kids on special diets that might interest you, too.We do the cod liver oil and find it makes a big difference. We use Green Pastures Emulsified Fermented Cod Liver Oil. Our daughter prefers the butter oil so she gets that.
